How file size conversion works
Explicit unit symbols determine the factor. The standard selector changes matching KB/KiB, MB/MiB, GB/GiB and TB/TiB unit families.
A practical example
1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes.
Using this tool
- Enter a non-negative amount and choose your conversion standard.
- Adjust decimal places to suit your task. Very small values retain significant digits.
- Copy the result with its unit, or swap the direction for a reverse conversion.
Why do decimal and binary results differ?
Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Bit-to-byte conversion always uses eight bits per byte. Explicit unit labels identify which convention applies.
