How decimal vs binary storage works

KB, MB, GB and TB use powers of 1,000. KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB use powers of 1,024. A display difference does not mean bytes disappeared.

A practical example

1 GB is approximately 0.931323 GiB.

Using this tool

  1. Enter a non-negative amount and choose your conversion standard.
  2. Adjust decimal places to suit your task. Very small values retain significant digits.
  3. Copy the result with its unit, or swap the direction for a reverse conversion.
Why do decimal and binary results differ?

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Bit-to-byte conversion always uses eight bits per byte. Explicit unit labels identify which convention applies.
