How bytes to kb conversion works

One KB is 1,000 bytes; one KiB is 1,024 bytes. Byte counts from file properties can use either display convention.

A practical example

2,048 bytes = 2.048 KB or 2 KiB.

Using this tool

  1. Enter a non-negative amount and choose your conversion standard.
  2. Adjust decimal places to suit your task. Very small values retain significant digits.
  3. Copy the result with its unit, or swap the direction for a reverse conversion.
Why do decimal and binary results differ?

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Bit-to-byte conversion always uses eight bits per byte. Explicit unit labels identify which convention applies.
